Reverend Virgil Hunton and his newly-formed congregation built Davis Street Baptist Church in 1936, working with their own hands and modest skills. In 2008, after the church closed, the current owners purchased the building and, in 2016, leased it to a local event firm. An extensive renovation was undertaken to reactivate the derelict church, accelerating the ongoing revitalization of TyPO, its neighborhood in Oak Cliff.

An entry porch and party deck were added, compatible in detail and scale with the original building. Landscaping and accessible parking were added. Original pine roof trusses were exposed, refurbished and highlighted, vertically extending the chapel into once-hidden space above the original dropped ceilings. Original wood windows were re-glazed and re-furbished.

Finishes, furniture, lighting and detailing are appropriate to the character and simple craft of the original building, including extensive re-use of original interior shiplap. Accessible restrooms, storage, catering kitchen, and modern MEP/fire protection systems were added. A gathering room (for break-out and swing time between wedding and reception) was created, with visual/physical access to the party deck through openings proportioned and detailed to match those of the original church.
