SM Hypermarket Prototype

This prototypical design was for the interior of a major Asian hypermarket chain, wishing to upgrade its image to broaden its appeal to a more diverse and upscale clientele. The hypermarkets are located in large, open shed-like buildings — 50,000 square feet or larger — with exposed structure and mechanical systems. Merchandise varies widely, from fresh produce and meats to electronic and furniture. While prices are low and value is high, it can be a challenge for shoppers to locate what they are shopping for.

DSGN’s design solutions celebrate the great volume of the store as well as its industrial nature by a flor plan that is open and highly flexible in the center, with specialty departments arrayed around the perimeter. A cohesive and integrated system of signage, finishes, and lighting works to not only add color, pattern, scale and visual interest, while clearly directing customers to easily fulfill their shopping lists.

Specialized departments, such as Electronics, Fresh Meats, Produce, or a Food Court (the Food Fiesta) can be located from a distance via bold signage, and are further identified by unique finishes, fixtures and signage
