Reverend Virgil Hunton and his newly-formed congregation built Davis Street Baptist Church in 1936, with their own hands and modest skills. In 2008, after the church closed, the current owners purchased the building and in 2016 leased it to a local event firm. An extensive renovation was undertaken to reactivate the 4250 sf church, accelerating the ongoing revitalization of TyPO, its neighborhood in Oak Cliff.⁠

An entry porch and party deck were added, compatible in detail and scale with the original building. A gathering room (used for break-out and swing time between wedding and reception) was created, with visual/physical access to the party deck through openings proportioned and detailed to match those of the original church. Accessible restrooms, storage, and catering kitchen provide support.⁠

Landscaping and accessible parking were added, as were high-efficiency lighting and HVAC systems. Original roof trusses were exposed, refurbished and highlighted, vertically extending the chapel into once-hidden space above the original dropped ceilings. All finishes, furniture, lighting and detailing were appropriate to the character and simple craft of the original building, including extensive re-use of original interior shiplap and wood windows. ⁠
